Part 3: Restored Power — What Power Actually Does: The Biology of Having Power

In Part 2, we talked about what happens to your body when you feel powerless. Stress builds up. Your brain struggles. Your health declines.

Now we flip the question:

What happens when you get control back? What does having power actually do for your body and mind?

The answer is simple but profound: Power isn’t just a social advantage — it’s a biological state. When you feel in control, your brain and body operate differently, measurably and predictably.

Power Activates the Brain’s “Approach System”

When you feel powerful, something shifts inside you. You move toward opportunities instead of backing away from problems. You speak up instead of staying silent. You act instead of freezing.

This isn’t just confidence — it’s biology.

Researchers Keltner, Gruenfeld, and Anderson (2003) describe this as the approach inhibition theory of power. In simple terms:

  • Feeling powerful activates the brain’s approach system
  • You focus more on rewards than threats
  • You think faster and second‑guess yourself less
  • Creativity increases
  • Healthy risk‑taking becomes easier

Power gives your brain permission to act.

Power Is a Health Factor

Regaining control doesn’t just change how you think — it changes your physical health.

In Part 2, we talked about allostatic load, the wear and tear caused by long‑term stress. It damages the parts of the brain responsible for clear thinking and emotional regulation.

But when people regain control, research shows:

  • Stress levels drop
  • Cortisol returns to normal
  • The prefrontal cortex (decision‑making), hippocampus (memory), and amygdala (emotion) begin to recover

This is real biological healing — not just feeling better mentally.

And this is where we return to what we established in Part 1: what we call “power” is really agency — the felt ability to shape your own life. Agency is not a luxury. It’s a basic biological requirement.

Power Builds on Itself

Power creates momentum.

When you take action and see results, your brain learns from that success. It encourages you to act again. Over time, this builds confidence, creativity, and persistence.

Research shows:

  • High‑power states improve working memory and flexible thinking (Galinsky et al., 2003)
  • Better working memory supports higher creativity
  • Power broadens attention and helps people see more options (Smith & Trope, 2006)

Power doesn’t just make you feel capable — it expands your actual mental capacity.

Power in Everyday Life

You don’t need a title or a corner office to experience the biology of power. It shows up in everyday situations:

  • Having control over your money
  • Independence at work
  • Choosing how you spend your time
  • Leaving harmful relationships

These everyday forms of control lower cortisol, improve brain function, and strengthen the immune system.

Research consistently shows:

  • Financial autonomy improves mental health
  • Workplace flexibility reduces stress
  • Environments that restore choice reduce allostatic load

Power is not abstract — it’s built into the small decisions you get to make every day.

Power and Your Voice

People who feel powerful speak more. They share ideas, participate in conversations, and express disagreement when needed.

This isn’t about being loud — it’s about believing your voice matters.

And the more you speak, the more your brain reinforces that belief. Being heard increases your sense of control, which makes you more willing to speak again.

Power restores presence.

Power Is Also Structural

Power isn’t only personal — it’s environmental.

Healthy workplaces, relationships, and communities give people:

  • Autonomy
  • Choice
  • A voice in decisions

These structures reduce stress and improve mental and physical health. When environments support autonomy, people heal.

Power can scale from individuals to groups to entire communities.

The Question We Can’t Ignore

Power heals. It activates the approach system. It repairs biological damage. It expands thinking. It restores voice.

But power also has a dangerous side.

Too much power can:

  • Reduce self‑awareness
  • Increase risk‑taking
  • Make people ignore feedback
  • Lead to reckless decisions

The same system that heals can also intoxicate.
